Our Refugee Culinary Training Program

Refugee Culinary Training Program | Flavors From Afar

Through the Tiyya Foundation, the primary aim of the Culinary Training Program is to equip our clients with the fundamental skills and certifications required to secure employment in commercial kitchens.

The Culinary Training Program provides our clients with the skills needed to secure gainful employment throughout Southern California. Completion of the program and entry into the workforce improves self-esteem, integration into the community and self-sufficiency. Additionally, by assisting refugee and asylum seeker chefs launch their own food business, we help foster an innovative, vibrant and inclusive culinary landscape in Los Angeles and the OC.

By fostering an environment that champions innovation, vibrancy, and inclusivity, we aspire to shape a culinary landscape in Los Angeles and Orange County that embraces and celebrates the unique flavors and traditions immigrants and refugees bring from their home countries. We strive to create not just skilled professionals but also visionary leaders who contribute to a more prosperous culinary community.

Volunteer as a Culinary Arts Instructor

  • Are you a skilled culinary professional eager to share your expertise? We're actively seeking volunteer chefs to lead workshops and mentor our enthusiastic group of refugees as they embark on their journey to establish careers in the culinary field. Your contribution, even leading a 30-minute workshop, can profoundly impact lives.

As a workshop facilitator, you'll collaborate closely with our dedicated culinary program coordinator to provide educational workshop(s) that cover a wide array of essential topics. From hands-on technical training in the kitchen to practical aspects like effectively managing Farmer’s Market booths.

These workshops serve as an opportunity to empower aspiring chefs with the practical skills and industry insights needed to navigate the culinary business landscape. Your guidance can make a lasting difference by equipping these individuals with the tools and knowledge necessary to gain employment in a commercial kitchen or to successfully launch their own food business.
