Chef Sny

Meet Sny Desir and his wife, Nancy!

Born in Les Cayes, Haiti (Kreyol: Okay, Ayiti), Sny's life has been a mosaic of diverse cultures and experiences. After completing his education in Haiti, Sny began working in hospitality in the neighboring country, the Dominican Republic. Wanting to return to Haiti, he went back to Les Cayes and began working as a Bartender. Sadly, the political instability in Haiti became too much to bear. After Sny endured two gunshot wounds in his legs, he chose to leave  home in pursuit of a safer life for himself and his family.

That’s when he began his odyssey across Latin America. Sny traveled and worked in the Dominican Republic, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, Panama, Peru, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Mexico. After Mexico, Desir and his family crossed the border to enter the United States, a country that presents itself as a safe haven and beacon of the American dream, only to find himself detained for seven months and five days.

Upon gaining refugee status, Desir and his family found solace in Florida, where Nancy's family resided. Eventually Sny partnered  with the organization "Clue Justice". They helped connect him  with Flavors From Afar where he now works as a Chef.

As a Haitian Chef with strong Latin American influence, Desir is excited to share his love of cuisine with the people of Los Angeles. At Flavors from Afar, he is able to showcase the global flavors that have defined his cooking, while continuing to act as a voice for refugees seeking solace.
